Two Dollars
Half the world’s population (3 billion+) lives on less than $2 per day. One billion live on less than $1 per day. To communicate this idea to the senior high youth we went on a field trip to Ogle’s to see if we could buy enough food to live on for a day with just $2. Here were some of the combinations:
- Rice and black beans
- Everything bagels, pancake mix, & 2 bananas
- Pancake mix & bananas
- Five pounds of potatoes
- Ramen noodles and kool aid
We found it was definitely doable, tho’ not incredibly tasty. We estimated that we spend between $15-25 per day on food. Almost ten times what most people live on.
We looked at these verses:
“He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.” -Prov. 19:17
“If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.” -Prov. 21:13
“A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.” -Prov 22:9

Great idea Nathan! Can I steel it and use it for our group? I think that it would be good.
